Summary: Introduction: Person-centered care is applicable to oral health professionals primarily to have a relationship with the patient including in the dental education environment. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the knowledge about oral hygiene of individuals who are treated in integrated treatment in the Dentistry Course of UFES as a precursor of changes in teaching paradigms. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional exploratory study based on a questionnaire applied to 174 individuals, divided into 87 patients in dental treatment with age ranging from 24 to 70 years (53.3 ± 11.6) and 87 as a control with age between 19 and 70 years (42.9 ± 15.0). The following parameters were considered: ethnicity, monthly income, habits of oral hygiene and knowledge of periodontal disease. Regarding the profile of the sample, it was pointed out that the female gender was predominant in both groups (71.26%); and for both groups the monthly income was between zero and one minimum wage (treatment group 34.48%, control 35.63%). Results: A similar oral health was obtained for the individuals of both groups, oral hygiene performed 3 times a day corresponded to 50.57% for the treatment group and 54.02% for the control group. Regarding the use of toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss, 54.02% for the group under treatment and 60.92% for the control. As for the self-perception related to periodontal disease, which was also similar, the group under treatment had 44.83% of people who had or had periodontal or gingival disease, WHEREas in the control 31.03%. About 9.20% of the group being treated and 11.49% of the control considered gingival bleeding to be normal. Conclusion: it can be concluded that the teaching is not aimed at prevention, since the knowledge about oral health of patients in dental treatment integrated in a dentistry course was similar to that of patients who were not in treatment, justifying the need to change the paradigm of teaching.
